Theology in View: The “What If” Problem (Part One)

Are we currently living in something like The Matrix? Can we know? And if not, then doesn’t agnosticism eat away at certainty?

In this first video, the problem of all-consuming agnosticism is set up, leaving us wondering if knowledge is forever crushed under the weight of ignorance.

If you find these helpful and enjoyable, please share with your friends.  In order to reach everyone who likes Gentle Reformation, Facebook charges fees in order to boost posts.  But if you share it, that helps circumvent it 🙂

3GT Episode 33: From Inscrutability to Concursus

The Three Guys go deeper than usual as they are joined by another guy leading them there, namely Jeff Stivason. Interviewed in the thick, musty air of the Rare Books Room at RPTS, Dr. Stivason tells us about his new book on Princeton theologian B.B. Warfield and his journey regarding his view of the inspiration of Scripture. Did God deliver his word in an inscrutable way (in a mysterious way impossible to understand) or concursively (the divine working in cooperation with the human authors)? Listen, for Warfield’s wisdom on this subject is needed today! (Note: In case you are wondering, the picture is of Warfield not Stivason. Jeff only wishes he could grow a beard like that.)

Plus, by listening you can find out how to win a free copy of Jeff’s book! Our thanks to P&R Publishing for sponsoring this episode!

3GT Episode 32: Grab ‘Em by Their Ordination

What is ordination? Why do churches perform this ritual – or not? After Kyle and Barry chime in, Aaron shows he does not just polish the pews. The difference between ordination and installation is discussed. Then more questions and answers begin to fly. Are deacons as well as elders to be ordained? How does apostolic succession factor in? What’s up with the laying on of hands? Is it merely symbolic or is a true power present when it occurs? Do elders of the church have authority? Is ordination permanent? And if you are going to grab someone by his ordination, where and how do you grab? Listen and learn why everyone in the church needs to understand this practice!

3GT Episode 31: Brothers, Some of Us are Professionals!

The parishonier questions why the church does not train some of its people to be high-powered executives. Kyle does a Kyle and turns the question back: Is it the job of the church to train people to do jobs? The prof offers a few ideas on gifting and mentoring. The theology of calling is discussed. We learn one of us has a rocket scientist for a brother. Kyle then goes Augustine on us, and did he really say do what you want? It’s another free wheeling conversation on 3GT!

3GT Episode 30: Keep the Sabbath Day Holy. But How?

Is the Sabbath now the first day of the week? Do you call it the Sabbath or the Lord’s Day? Can you have a “to-do” and “to-don’t” list without becoming legalistic about it? How do you rest on the Sabbath? How do you keep it like Jesus did? What do you do when you are asked to work on it? What if you are traveling and there’s no good church around? Are we more worried about legalism than obedience? And should you have a Sabbath bucket of toys like Kyle does? So many questions! Are there answers? Listen to 3GT and find out!

Introducing “Theology in View.” A New Video Blog By Yours Truly

So here we go.

I’m beginning a new project, one that involves much scribbling and theology.  Yes.  That’s right.  A video blog designed to communicate theology in a short, fresh, generally tasty, and slightly humorous fashion.

I have many topics I would like to cover, but as you can imagine, the process of coordinating voice to drawings is, well, not terribly easy.  So I hope to kick these out a couple times a month.  But no promises.  Some will be more theologically advanced (like the one here).  And some will be more elementary.  I will probably call them “Theology for Noobs.”

Naturally, I would covet any help you might toss my way, such as sharing the video on Facebook (or subscribing on YouTube).  To the degree that people find these enjoyable and helpful, to that same degree I will feel compelled to draw little Reformed stick men!

3GT Episode 27: A Strong Dose of Vitamin R

Kyle talks about his passion for church revitalization. Barry reminds him that church planters are the modern rock stars in the kingdom. But the Borgmeister trumps this suggestion by pulling out the apostolic card of revitalization, and then just has to mention the rural church. The guys tighten down on the Biblical call to being revived and keeping core things central. The connection between reviving pastors and reviving churches is explored. Pragmatism is warned against, while the place of pastor-coaches and prayer are discussed. Open wide and take your Vitamin R!

3GT Episode 26: Technolatry

Barry the old guy is still uncomfortable with technology, especially when it looks like a pretty woman. Aaron and Kyle dodge the ball a bit at first, waxing philosophical about technology and warning about being  too Amish. But then Aaron starts tackling AI humanoids and the Turing Test. Kyle warns against the danger of the Tower of Babel mentality. Creators as well as consumers are warned. Movies like Ex Machina and Her get referenced. Can the Larger Catechism and the Ten Commandments save the day?

3GT Episode 25: I Was Born a Ramblin’ Man

No, this episode is not about Kyle’s preaching. Rather, the guys have been on the road and explain their travels. Their wanderings take them to a discussion about the doctor of ministry degree and the importance of continuing education for pastors. And we rejoice that far from rambling, Kyle just celebrated a decade of settled marital bliss!
