Iowa caucuses today. Some people who have invested their lives in certain campaigns over the last few months will have their hopes crushed. Maybe really crushed.
The same thing happened in 1964 in the general presidential election. My grandparents poured their lives into the Barry Goldwater campaign. The sign in this picture stood in front of their house. The slogan was more than a campaign slogan; for them, it was their life. You know what happened politically. Barry Goldwater lost in a landslide to Lyndon B. Johnson. With their worldly hopes crushed, my grandparents and their friends who had invested their lives in the Goldwater campaign began to study the book of John with Dr. Roy Blackwood. The Lord changed their hearts and drew them into a living relationship with him in the following months. By grace, their house changed from being sold on Goldwater to a being house built on the Rock, Jesus Christ (Matthew 7:24-27).
Of course, they continued to labor in politics for years to come, knowing that Jesus is Lord of all. But their hope was in heaven.
This sign now hangs in my garage as a reminder to pray for those whose political hopes have been crushed. Please join me in praying that God’s will would be done in Iowa today. Pray especially for those whose hopes are dashed. Pray that their hearts would be fertile soil for the gospel. May today be a day of salvation!
