3GT Episode 337: Covenant Baptism
Sometimes, ideas for 3GT episodes are presented to the guys on a plate—or, perhaps, in this case, a font. Kyle is about to go out on a pastoral call to prepare parents who have just had a child for baptism. So, the 3GTers address this issue to bring clarity to this important Presbyterian practice.
Presbyterians are not the only branch of the church that practices the baptism of babies. The guys first distinguish our practice from that of other bodies, such as Roman Catholics or Lutherans, who can teach the false doctrine of baptismal regeneration. They speak of the promises and signs of the covenant that the Lord has made through the ages of the church, fulfilled in Jesus Christ. They further discern the practice of covenant baptism and baby dedications.
From there, they discuss more pastoral and family issues. How will Kyle prepare this family for baptism? They remind listeners of the baptismal vows of the RPCNA, as they highlight both the Biblical promises of God for our children and the responsibilities Christian parents have in raising their children. The church's proper role in the life of the family is addressed as well.
