Household Worship Guide on Sound the Alarm! and Before the Great and Terrible Day of the Lord from Joel 2

October 15, 2025

Does God bring such judgments today? We can’t know for certain, but often in times of so-called natural disasters (drought, storms, swarms, epidemics, etc) there has been a call to prayer—a call to seek God’s favor and his mercy. Good idea. Sound the alarm! And pray.

Return, in the Bible, can just mean going back to a place you once were. It also means, in several places, to repent—to change your mind. Ruth has repented and believed in the covenant Yahweh. Naomi is returning, but with little faith in the LORD.

At an early hour in the morning the family was assembled, when a portion of Scripture was read from the Old Testament, which was followed by a hymn and a prayer, in which thanks were offered up to the Almighty for preserving them… and for his goodness… and, at the same time, his grace was implored…

As we pray for effective hearing of the word preached, let’s prepare for it as well in our daily household worship. That is, to enhance the hearing of the Word preached by reviewing the Word that has been preached and previewing the Word that will be preached is one of the aims of Worship Connected.

God gave me examples of fathers leading their families in family worship—including my own father early in my life. I remember having to stand up during prayer time in our family worship so that I didn’t fall asleep. If this guide is useful to Jesus’s church, then to God alone be the glory.

Obviously if this is a household worship guide for your congregation, then you must keep your congregation in mind as you prepare. If you have small children in your congregation, then I suggest you prepare the weekly material with at least an aim toward the hearts of these little ones.
