Russell Moore Interview of Rosaria Butterfield

The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Church held their national conference at the end of October on the topic of “The Gospel, Homosexuality, and the Future of Marriage.”  Russell Moore interviewed Rosaria Butterfield, author of The Secret Thoughts of an Unlikely Convert.  You can watch this fascinating interview below.

I don’t know what it is, or why it is, but this woman and her story send up all kinds of red flags for me. I have read her book, listened to many interviews, read articles about her and despite my desire to believe her and be grateful for her story, something doesn’t ring true. Sorry. I wish it were otherwise. I’m not questioning the authenticity of her faith, but rather whether her homosexuality was more of a form of rebellion that many young people go through. It did give her a certain notoriety and attention especially in the academic world which rewarded people for these positions. Now she is getting the same, or even more, attention from the evangelistic community. Just something to think about as you listen to her.

As one among many who have watched and known Rosaria over many years, I can testify that she is authentic and honest in the life story she tells, both before her conversion and afterwards. She has not sought the attention (much of which has been hostile toward her by the way); rather, the Lord has placed it upon her. If you listen to her, she is seeking to glorify Christ, not herself, and to help others in the church be compassionate toward those engaged in this lifestyle so they might be delivered. Jesus Christ is still working wonders and bringing salvation.

Jesus said that our reflections on others are also reflections on ourselves and our faith in Him (Matthew 7:1-6). Please reflect carefully on why you wrote what you did.
