Life in 2019

The month of June has been a difficult month for Biblical Christians. Our newsfeeds, emails, Twitter accounts, and various other forms of media have bombarded us with negative news. At least my own  news thread has been negative and discouraging. I think that many of you are in the same situation.

A few examples,

A spice company that I have used for years has suddenly decided to be uber-socially woke. They sent us an email stating if we bought a particular spice mix that they would give a dollar to planned parenthood to support a women’s right to choose. More emails came lecturing us from gay rights to gun control.  It is depressing that I am now having to deal with immorality as I try and buy paprika and spice mixes.

Georgia passed a law limiting the availability of abortions. A well known on-demand video service comes out and says they are dedicated to overturning it. They are going to send money to overturn this law.  So now I have to deal with immorality as I try and watch a show or movie with my family.

It is Pride month. This would not be so bad if it were not just shoved down our throats. Every commercial it seems to depicts a gay couple to sell their product. Anyone who speaks against this immoral lifestyle is called a bigot, hateful, and ugly. “Love is Love”, they say. It is not loving to see a fellow human engage in an activity that the Lord says is a sin. Even worst is to see pastors, churches, and denominations completely sell out to the world over the scriptures.

Many reports of men competing as women and breaking records and winning titles. How is this even possible that this is our culture? How cannot even the fallen world see that this is just wrong?

Many are calling for a boycott of these companies. First, do we have enough strength to make a difference? Second, if we are going to be consistent where are we going to buy anything? Finally is this a political answer for a spiritual problem. I am still wrestling over this. There will be some that I probably do not buy from again, but that is my decision. Each of you has to do what the Lord leads you to do in your circumstance.

We are coming out of a time where the church was respected or for the last few years even tolerated. In the South especially, the church was our culture. Now we are being swallowed up by a progressive agenda that cares nothing for Christ or Word.

Proverbs 29:27 says, “An unjust man is an abomination to the righteous, but one whose way is straight is an abomination to the wicked.”

Jesus said in John 15:18–19, “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. [19] If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.”

How do we overcome this discouraging world that we are finding ourselves in today?

  1. Trust in Christ who has overcome the world - John 16:33 “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. Inthe world you will have tribulation. But take heart; lI have overcome the world.”
  2. Have faith in God’s power and plan - 2 Corinthians 5:7 “for we walk by faith, not by sight.“
  3. Pray through it - Philippians 4:6–7 “do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
