"Doing" Sabbath+ Household Worship Guide Luke 24

By way of reminder, at Springs Reformed Church we distribute a weekly guide running from the Lord's Day to Saturday with Monday-Wednesday reviewing the sermons that were preached the Lord's Day at the start of the week and Thursday-Saturday previewing the sermons that will be preached the coming Lord's Day.

However, for the posts here I will link to the guide from Thursday to Wednesday so that all are aimed at the Lord's Day as the peak of the 7-day rhythm as seen in the image above. The Lord's Day post includes links to the sermons.

However for several weeks over the next several months, when I am not preaching I will play "catch up" with this Christ in the Old Testament series. Ironically, as I comment on "doing" Sabbath, I didn't until part-way into this series have a Lord's Day guide for my weekly household worship guide (more in Thoughts for Pastors (below)). I will include a template for the Lord's Day based on what I began adding on January 19, 2025, even thought it was not in my initial printed guides before that date.

This week we will consider David's desire to build God's house and God's response.

Thursday Luke 24:13-33 – Jesus in all the Scriptures.
Friday Luke 24:33-53 – Jesus in the Law, the Prophets, and the Psalms.
Saturday Luke 24:1–12, 1 Cor 15:1–8 – Christ…According to the Scriptures
Lord’s Day
Monday Luke 24:13-35 – Burning Hearts.
Tuesday Luke 24:30-53 – Opened Eyes, Opened Minds
Wednesday Luke 23:55-24:12 He is not here, but he has risen!

If you find it useful to use these in your household/family worship, consider asking your pastor to speak to me about him developing something similar in your congregation.

Thoughts for Pastors:

An additional word connected in the Scriptures to the Sabbath Day is עָשָׂה (ʿāśâ), most often translated as “do” or “make.” If we are to observe the Sabbath, looking forward to the day coming and to remember the Sabbath, considering the day past, then on the day itself we are to “do Sabbath.” We see this word used in various places in the Bible. “… the LORD your God has commanded you to keep the Sabbath day (Dt. 5:15).” “The Israelites must observe the Sabbath, celebrating it… (Ex. 31:16)”.

While defending my DMin dissertation, I was reminded by our Old Testament professor, one of my readers, of this “doing” Sabbath and was encouraged to include a day in Worship Connected for household worship on the Sabbath Day. So, I changed what had previously been a 6-day guide to a 7-day guide, focusing the Lord’s Day guide on the preaching and worship that day.
